Jennifer Peña made a name for herself in the now-languishing Tejano genre, but Dicen Que el Tiempo finds her far removed from that localized sound. If anything, her ’90s discs were a mere setup for the more polished, accomplished work she’s released since signing with the Univision label five years ago. Peña seems comfortable in her role as a burgeoning pop diva, and her sprightly personality is what brings most of Dicen Que el Tiempo ’s best tracks to life. It’s the fullest realization of her pop potential to date. Opener “Soy Asi (The Tequila Song)” is a pivotal kickoff point, celebrating Peña’s diverse identity.”Ladron” packs a fiery pop punch, and “Marzo 17″ is a sun-kissed ode to love. Peña wrote most of the tracks with boyfriend Obie Bermudez, and the couple’s chemistry translates well to disc. “Tu Mejor Amiga” brims with electro-tinged optimism, and sweeping first single “Como Entender” is in line with her best ballands. But it’s the blaring ska groove of “Tus Besos” that will surprise fans. Seduccion finds Tejano princess Jennifer Peña fully embracing her potential and individuality as an artist. The album features an impressive mix of polished cumbias and dramatic ballads, anchored by Peña’s maturing vocals and the slick work of producers Rudy Perez and Kike Santander. “Vivo y Muero en Tu Piel” is the type of glittering, emotive ballad that has become a trademark of Peña’s repertoire. The song is also featured in a cumbia remix and in a re-recorded salsa version, which finds Peña spicing things up with a more spontaneous vocal delivery. Producer Santander melds tropical and cumbia rhythms on the fiery “Cumba IHO,” one of the album’s best tracks. Peña herself boasts production credits on “Ya Veras” and “Si Yo Me Vuelvo a Enamorar,” a pair of straightforward cumbias that blend perfectly with the rest of the album. Curiously, the weakest moment is “Como Saber,” Emilio Estefan Jr.’s only contribution to Seduccion . The vocals and verses are appropriately dramatic, but the chorus soon becomes repetitive, and the instrumentation sounds uneven and thin. It’s a small misstep, however, in an otherwise vibrant collection of songs. There have been changes in the past few years for teenage Tejano singer Jennifer Peña. She is now being billed as a solo artist (though her longtime backup band, Los Jetz, is still accompanying her), her voice is taking on a new maturity, and A.B. Quintanilla III has taken over the producing reins. The restructuring has worked to Peña’s advantage on her fourth and best album, Abrazame y Besame , which should put her back on top of the Tejano scene. The sound has been refocused and evenly split between cumbias and pop numbers, making for a solid, diverse collection. Cumbias “Si Tu Te Vas,” “Ya No,” and “No Te Voy a Perdonar” sparkle with energy, and Peña teams up with Kumbia Kings vocalist DJ Kane for the stellar title track. Quintanilla gives Peña a soulful shimmer on pop ballads “Vuelve,” “You Say,” and “Por un Beso,” one of the album’s best cuts. Only a year after the death of Tejano queen Selena, young hopefuls clamored to inherit her title. One of the most promising–at only 12 years of age–was Jennifer Peña. She had the support of Selena’s label, EMI Latin; worked with many of Selena’s musicians and producer on this debut album; and was managed by Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. Still, the biggest question was Peña’s own talent, and she delivered throughout the album. Many of the songs–”Me Piden,” “Vete Con Ella,” “Quisiera Verte Otra Vez”–come off as innocuous filler, but Peña and her producers hit the mark elsewhere. “Ven a Mi” offers a playful cumbia groove, and “Pura Dulzura,” the album’s best track and biggest hit, is an undeniably infectious treat.
