Seduccion finds Tejano princess Jennifer Peña fully embracing her potential and individuality as an artist. The album features an impressive mix of polished cumbias and dramatic ballads, anchored by Peña’s maturing vocals and the slick work of producers Rudy Perez and Kike Santander. “Vivo y Muero en Tu Piel” is the type of glittering, emotive ballad that has become a trademark of Peña’s repertoire. The song is also featured in a cumbia remix and in a re-recorded salsa version, which finds Peña spicing things up with a more spontaneous vocal delivery. Producer Santander melds tropical and cumbia rhythms on the fiery “Cumba IHO,” one of the album’s best tracks. Peña herself boasts production credits on “Ya Veras” and “Si Yo Me Vuelvo a Enamorar,” a pair of straightforward cumbias that blend perfectly with the rest of the album. Curiously, the weakest moment is “Como Saber,” Emilio Estefan Jr.’s only contribution to Seduccion . The vocals and verses are appropriately dramatic, but the chorus soon becomes repetitive, and the instrumentation sounds uneven and thin. It’s a small misstep, however, in an otherwise vibrant collection of songs. Ramon Ayala loyalists and longtime norteño purveyors, Intocable burst on the scene in the early ’90s with a vibrant sound that knocked out many pale imitators. Lead singer-accordionist Ricky Munoz again shows off his norteño/soul/blues-drenched vocals. A few even say he sounds like a 19-year-old Ayala. The band’s schtick is in full evidence: tension-filled music propelled by accordion runs, thumping bass, and light percussion. It’s almost formulaic, but hey why not? The band’s recent hits has proved consistent chart toppers on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks. Even with the departure of Johnny Lee Rosas and Albert Ramirez, Intocable hasn’t lost its golden touch. Honest lyrics, mature themes and solid musicianship distinguish this fine album. The band, based in Zapata, Texas, quickly stood above the herd when it broke through in the mid-’90s with a distinct pop/blues/Norteño sound. Lead singer-accordionist Ricky Muñoz has always sounded like the legend Ramón Ayala, but with the bottom-heavy rhythms and folk/rock melodies injected here, this is not your father’s Norteño music. Daring and inspiring, the music pushes the envelope with tension-filled tunes such as “Fuerte No Soy,” a bluesy ballad, and “Es Tan Bello,” whose folk/pop acoustic opening is like a fresh rain in a staid genre.
